Ukraine begins tense presidential election run-off

Posted By admin on February 8, 2010

Ukrainians vote in a round of the presidential election after a
bruising campaign, and the warnings of mass protests and
demonstrations.
PM Yulia Tymoshenko and opposition leader Viktor Yanukovych will
compete for the position after losing President Viktor Yushchenko in
the first round.
Both sides have accused each other of conspiracy to influence the vote.
According to some analysts, a close race, said the losing side will
challenge the most likely outcome of the investigation.
Polls so far seem to be, our correspondent says.
The Electoral Commission said all polling stations opened on time and
both candidates have voted.
Election observers say they expect a higher turnout than the first
round.
According to Yushchenko, Ukraine has aligned itself with the West,
traditionally close relations with Russia giant neighbor.
This could be a turning point in determining whether such a strongly
pro-Western and anti-Russian policy, or does not continue.
Many people here are very disappointed with the political leadership,
the faction which the country has once again during the economic
crisis, Ukraine has been very difficult to do.
And conduct campaigns of two candidates for the election to reassure
voters that much.
Saturday, accused Ms Tymoshenko political bloc of Yanukovych’s Party of
Regions for the closure of fans to keep voting in the eastern Donetsk
region – a stronghold of the opposition.
The project team of Yanukovych to the success of the elections are
fraudulent, criminal rules and violations of civil rights, block Prime
Minister said in a statement.
Ms. Tymoshenko had threatened earlier that their supporters in the
streets if he loses the election, saying that the demonstrations could
be higher than the 2004 Orange Revolution that swept Yushchenko to
power.
Yanukovych camp responded with claims that there were few supporters of
Prime Minister manipulation excluded from voting in an attempt to
express the eastern Ukraine has been maintained.
Nobody believed that one of the parties in the electoral process would
stoop to such cynicism should, said Mr. Yanukovych campagin manager
Mykola Azarov.
Yanukovych won last month in the first round, finishing 10% by
Tymoshenko.
It seems to forget the real problems and political debates that would
spoil all the belts, said the BBC, the Richard Galpin in Kiev.

Party investigates claims on AM Mick Bates’s night out

Posted By admin on February 8, 2010

Liberal Democrats are investigating allegations about the behaviour of
a senior member of the Welsh assembly in hospital after a night out in
Cardiff.
Welsh party leader Kirsty Williams is trying to establish the facts on
claims about Montgomeryshire AM Mick Bates.
She said she understood he was knocked unconscious and had a serious
head injury which still caused him problems.
She also understood he apologised “if his behaviour caused any
offence”. He said he could not recall what happened.
The party said it took the allegations in Wales on Sunday about his
behaviour last month “very seriously”.
The claims emerged as the party held its Welsh spring conference in
Swansea.
Mr Bates was due to speak at a fringe meeting, but he was replaced by
Lembit Opik, the MP for his constituency.
Ms Williams told the BBC Wales Politics Show she took the allegations
“very seriously,” and she would contact the NHS trust involved.
“We need to establish the facts,” she said.
“I’ve spoken to Mick Bates – he’s apologised if his behaviour following
the incident has caused any concerns.”
When asked about whether he still had her confidence, she replied: “Yes
he does.
“We don’t know the facts – we need to get to the bottom of this. My
understanding is that Mick was knocked unconscious and suffered a
severe head injury – which he’s continuing to have problems with.”
She added: “Abuse towards NHS staff is not acceptable so we need to
talk to the trust to establish the facts”.
Mr Bates, 62, told BBC Wales that he could not remember what had
happened on the night.
Earlier, a spokesperson for the Welsh Liberal Democrats said: “We take
these allegations very seriously and we would not condone this sort of
alleged behaviour.
“We have already begun an investigation to establish the facts and we
will return with a further statement once our investigations are
concluded.”
Mr Bates, who has represented Montgomeryshire since the assembly was
founded in 1999, has been chairman of its sustainability committee
since 2007.
A former teacher who became a farmer, he said last year that his wife,
a headmistress, was retiring in 2011, and that it was an “ideal time”
for him to stand down.
Mr Bates is also a former county chairman of the National Farmers’
Union, and became a local councillor in 1994.
He held his assembly seat at the 2007 election with a majority of just
over 2,000 ahead of the Conservatives.

New group fights badger cull in west Wales

Posted By admin on February 8, 2010

A new group, badger slaughter planned for parts of west Wales, to
combat the spread of bovine tuberculosis is the first public hearing is
held.
John Evans of the Save the Badger, which met in Llantrisant, said that
presented a united front against the cruel slaughter of thousands of
animals were killed.
The Assembly Government said the pilot of Pembrokeshire sacrifice is
necessary, besides cattle, tighter controls.
Ministers have said that bovine TB is out of control and sustainable.
_ The Badger Trust is a member of the storage housing – is also seeking
a judicial review of the decision to continue the slaughter.
Mr Evans said the public does not know the extent of killing of badgers
will be killed thousands .
He said the Badger to save the group was created now because so many
organizations have already been isolated things together.
We must unite to show people in Wales, there is less resistance to it
by the many organizations of all types of interests.
But this is an issue that we are all one – we want to stop the
slaughter of badgers in Wales. Mr. Evans also said the group planned
to demonstrate and to protest and hopefully change people’s opinions.
He said: It is a violation of the law. We stayed within the law. We
believe we have the public behind us. Installation of the last
government gave the green light for murder, the most common livestock
in January.
Slaughter covers an area of 288 square kilometers (111 square miles)
north of Pembrokeshire, and a small part of a Carmarthenshire
Ceredigion.
Opposition parties in the Assembly supported the decision.
Rural Affairs Minister Elin Jones said in January: Bovine TB is out of
control and sustainable, and cost taxpayers last year nearly 24 million
dollars in compensation to farmers.
We know that cattle and badgers are the main sources of the disease and
that if our goal of eradicating bovine tuberculosis to succeed, we must
fight the disease in two ways.
The approach we have here in the pilot area for implementing badger
slaughter cattle tested with the exception of strict controls, not from
the UK.
It is, however, has proven successful in countries like New Zealand,
where the wild possums and livestock are the main sources of pollution.

“Climategate” scientist contemplated suicide

Posted By admin on February 8, 2010

The scientist at the centre of the “climategate” scandal says he
contemplated suicide after leaked e-mails were seized on by sceptics.
In an interview with the Sunday Times, Professor Phil Jones also said
he had been provoked into sending the e-mails.
It was claimed the e-mails, leaked after a University of East Anglia
server was hacked into, showed data was being manipulated.
Prof Jones, 57, said he had received death threats over the incident.
He told the newspaper: “I did think about it, yes. About suicide. I
thought about it several times, but I think I’ve got past that stage
now.”
He agreed it became his “David Kelly moment” – a reference to the
scientist who killed himself in the aftermath of the “sexed up” Iraq
intelligence dossier claims.
Professor Jones, 57, also said he received death threats in the
aftermath of the scandal.
“People said I should go kill myself. They said they knew where I
lived.”
The row erupted last December when hundreds of messages between
scientists at the University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit
(CRU) and their peers around the world were put on the internet along
with other documents.
Some allege one of e-mails suggested Professor Jones – then head of the
CRU – wanted certain papers excluded from the UN’s next major
assessment of climate science.
He strenuously denies this was his intention and says other e-mails
have been taken out of context.
Critics of the scientific consensus have claimed that the e-mails
undermine the case that greenhouse gas emissions from human activities
are causing global warming.
In the interview, Prof Jones acknowledged that he had not dealt with
requests for data in “the right way”.
But he added he was provoked by those obstructing his work into writing
messages that his detractors claim called on colleagues to destroy or
withdraw information.
“It was just frustration. I thought the requests were just
distractions. It was taking us away from our day jobs. It was written
in anger,” he said.
“I am obviously going to be much more careful about my e-mails in
future. I will write every e-mail as if it is for publication.
“But I stand 100% behind the science. I did not manipulate or fabricate
any data and I look forward to proving that.”

The Commission also seeks to enforce existing legislation designed to influence the government of alcohol Bill, a report in the summer.

Ms Baillie said the Labor Party’s position on minimum requirements for pricing – a policy that has found support for a strong opposition.

Prayers said after McFall family found dead in Oswestry

Posted By admin on February 7, 2010

Prayers will be said in a Shropshire town later where the bodies of a mother, father and daughter were found.
A special service will be held at St Oswald’s Church, in Oswestry, after Sue McFall, 56, and daughter Francesca, 18, were found at their home on Friday.
A double murder and suicide inquiry was launched after Hugh McFall, 48, was later found dead at an industrial unit.
Police have said no-one else is being sought over the “family tragedy”. Post-mortem tests are yet to be carried out.
Mrs McFall and her daughter were found dead at their home in Hampton Road at about 0500 GMT on Friday.
A body said to be that of Mr McFall, but yet to be formally identified, was found in St Martins, near Oswestry, at about 0930 GMT on the same day.
The bodies of Sue McFall and her daughter were found at their home
The Reverend Simon Thorburn, who will lead prayers at St Oswald’s, encouraged people to share their problems more openly and said the community was still reeling from the deaths.
“I think people are thinking about other friends they know, and who else is in trouble and you don’t really know about it,” he said.
“People do keep their problems to themselves… one of the things perhaps from the church point of view is to say to people, looking forward, we really should share burdens with one another.”
He said a condolence book had been opened at the church ahead of the service on Sunday, but did not know if family members would attend.
James Bond, a neighbour and close friend of the McFall family, said the news had come as a massive shock.
The BBC Radio Shropshire presenter, 51, said: “The police in your kitchen at quarter to six in the morning isn’t quite what you expect.
“And when they say brutally ‘We can only tell you this straight away. It’s tragic news. There are two dead bodies next door. We need a pointer to try and find the man you know as a friend next door as soon as possible’ – you think goodness me what’s life come to? It’s been turned upside down in a moment.”
David Lloyd, a former leader of Oswestry Borough Council, who knew Mr McFall, said the important thing now was “to offer support”.
“The way in which the public reacts in support of those who are suffering is quite substantial,” he said.
“There’s a great sense of knowing and belonging in the town.
“One doesn’t know the trigger point of all of this, but clearly there are pressures on people and people react in different ways and sadly there are now three people lying dead who not so long ago were probably living a very full life in this town.”
