director general of the corporation, has said.
Speaking to staff, Mr Thompson also announced that half of the websites
on BBC online will close by 2013.
Among the closures will be teen services Switch and Blast, with Mr
Thompson admitting Channel 4 should lead the way with these audiences.
The strategy review has now been submitted to the BBC Trust and a
public consultation period will take place.

licence fee payer through complementary commercial activities.

magazines in the UK.

“putting quality first”.

Real Madrid top football rich list for fifth year

Posted By admin on March 2, 2010

Real Madrid have topped the league table of the world’s richest
football clubs for the fifth straight year, according to Deloitte’s
sport unit.
Its Football Money League, based on data for season 2008/09, also says
Real are the first global sports team to see annual revenues top 400m
euros (£357m).
Real’s arch-rivals Barcelona have taken second spot in the list, ahead
of Manchester United who drop to third.
Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool are fifth, sixth and seventh
respectively.
The authors said that United would have been top of the Money League if
the pound was still at June 2007 levels.
But they point out that, despite exchange rate issues, seven of the top
20 in its table are from England, the other three being Tottenham
(15th), Manchester City(19th), and relegated club Newcastle United
(20th).
All the 20 clubs represented are from the “big five” European leagues,
with Germany contributing five clubs, Italy four, and France and Spain
two each.
Real retained top position despite a disappointing season, coming
second in La Liga and exiting the Champions League at the Round of 16
stage.
But they were boosted by a much-improved television contract with
Mediapro, guaranteeing the club more than 1.1bn euros over seven
seasons.
Arch-rivals Barcelona had a hugely successful season, winning La Liga
and the Champions League – beating Manchester United, who won the
English Premier League in 2008/09, in the final.
“We continue to assert that the game’s top clubs are well placed to
meet the challenges presented by the difficult economic environment,”
said Deloitte’s Dan Jones, who compiled the report.
“Their large and loyal supporter bases, ability to drive broadcast
audiences, and continuing attraction to corporate partners, provide a
strong base to underpin revenues.”
He said that this was shown by the fact that the combined revenues of
the top 20 Money League clubs was over 3.9bn euros in 2008/09, up 26m
euros on the previous year.
And the majority of Money League clubs maintained average match
attendances when comparing 2008/09 with 2007/08.
There was not a great deal of movement in the top 20, with two new
clubs – Werder Bremen and Manchester City – replacing VfB Stuttgart and
Fenerbahce.
Mr Jones said the limited change “reflects the fact that those clubs
with the largest supporter bases in strongest economic markets, high
attraction to commercial partners, and consistent participation in
European competition, will dominate the top positions”.

Conservatives ‘to rush in new law on academies

Posted By admin on March 2, 2010

The Conservatives say they would change the law within days of winning a general election to allow hundreds more schools in England to become academies.
Shadow schools secretary Michael Gove said a new education bill would remove the need for schools to consult local councils before becoming independent.
It would also exempt the best schools from Ofsted inspections to allow the watchdog to focus on problem schools.
Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg said he wanted to focus on cutting class sizes.
Academies receive state funding, but control over how that money is spent rests with those in charge of the individual school.
Mr Gove, along with party leader David Cameron, told a meeting of head teachers that if the Tories won the general election, expected in May, a new education bill would be on the statute book by July.
This, he said, would allow schools to opt out of council control and become academies by September.
“If we win the election, we will act within days to raise standards,” he said.
“We need a new generation of independent state schools run by teachers who know your child’s name, not by politicians.”
He also announced plans to reform Ofsted and identify the 100 worst performing schools in England and place them in the hands of “school leaders with a proven track record of success”.
“Learning from practitioners in the field, trusting professionals rather than ideology and accentuating that what happens in the best should happen in all that are at the heart of our policy,” he added.
Mr Gove later told the BBC that schools graded “outstanding” by Ofsted would be exempt from future inspections.
“The critical thing is that if things go wrong, if alarm bells start ringing, if there’s a high staff turnover or if a great head leaves… we can signal to the inspectors that they should go in.
“But if a school continues to be outstanding why should it be bothered with bureaucracy?”

Police watchdog investigates Leeds inmate death case

Posted By admin on March 2, 2010

The police watchdog is investigating a force’s contact with a man who died after becoming ill while in custody.
Jason Jones, 39, died in Leeds General Infirmary on 5 February. He had been remanded at HMP Leeds after being arrested in Beeston on 2 February.
A post-mortem test showed he suffered a brain injury before he was detained.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said it would determine whether Mr Jones’s treatment was appropriate.
Three men, aged 44, 39 and 34, and a 34-year-old woman, have been arrested on suspicion of Mr Jones’s murder. They have been bailed pending further inquiries.
Mr Jones is believed to have been living in Lodge Lane in the city.
He visited a relative on 2 February and had visible injuries but refused to go to hospital.
The relative called police, who found that Mr Jones was wanted for failing to appear in court over an allegation that he had breached a behaviour order.
He was arrested and taken to hospital, where he received treatment before being taken to Killingbeck Police Station.
On 3 February he was remanded to HMP Leeds. The next day he collapsed at the prison and was taken to the infirmary, where he died.
Police have been trying to trace his movements in the days leading up to his arrest, and have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
IPCC commissioner Nicholas Long said: “Mr Jones then spent a period of time in police custody prior to his transfer into the court and prison system.
“It is important we independently investigate that period in police custody to determine whether his treatment was appropriate and to ensure nothing happened which may have compounded or added to his existing injuries.”
